Exclusive Interview with Frank Bonnet

Blockchains games are on the rise—not merely because they are a lot of fun but also thanks to their play-to-earn component. One of the upcoming titles currently generating buzz is Cryptopia, an innovative free-to-play-and-earn game set in a futuristic society built entirely on the blockchain. Today we have the opportunity to talk about Cryptopia with its founder, Frank Bonnet.

A native of the Netherlands, Frank Bonnet has made Thailand his home for more than ten years. Having picked up the knack for programming at a young age, he became a software engineer professionally at age 23, with a solid background in creating all kinds of applications with .NET.

Question #1
interview-question
How did you get your start in the blockchain industry?
coingape
In 2016, Ethereum caught my eye and I joined the bandwagon early, honing my skills by developing smart contracts with Solidity. It was an exciting time—after all, I was working on the new frontier of programmable currency. I created smart contracts to launch tokens for various projects as well as helped make governance decisions using a DAO. You could say that there was no looking back: after that, I took up blockchain projects exclusively. Eventually, I found myself with a developed smart-contract project, an extensive amount of coding experience, and relationships with parties interested in investing in a blockchain project. That's when I decided it was time to make a game.
Question #2
interview-question
Where did you get the inspiration for Cryptopia?
coingape
It’s partly because I’m a big fan of the Civilization franchise and wanted to replicate it on a blockchain. My first iteration of it, which I had worked on for a year, was called Civilizations Unchained. Around this time, Hans (Hansco Leek, Co-Founder) became involved, and Toine (Toine Koene, Web-Developer/Concept Manager) soon after. While we had a good working name, we needed one with a wide appeal while still being easy to understand. Luckily, I discovered that the domain name Cryptopia.com was available. Cryptopia is a name overflowing with meaning, but we felt that it captured people’s attention and imagination, so we went with it.
Question #3
interview-question
What makes Cryptopia stand out from other blockchain games out there?
coingape
I envisioned Cryptopia to operate like Bitcoin—highly decentralized and impossible to take down. Various blockchain games out there still rely on centralized servers, opening themselves up to hacking and DDoS attacks. Cryptopia, however, is designed to remain online for as long as people are playing it. While most other blockchain games are limited to holding an NFT until another player purchases it, Cryptopia features two distinct play strategies. In the Tycoon route, players invest in assets to create businesses, which gives work opportunities for other players. In the Adventurer route, which is the free-to-play component, players invest time to build up a career as a professional and take on jobs the Tycoons provide. These paths create a sustainable ecosystem that drives the game economy. Sure, those who can invest in assets have a head-start, but our inherently fair system makes it so that the funds richer players provide are funneled back not to the developers or the big gaming and marketing companies but to the players. Thus, those who play smart advance and profit, regardless of their financial start. The game encourages innovation and collaboration, things we want to foster in the real world. Moreover, because of its forward-thinking design, our game’s technology can be helpful to other blockchain projects outside of Cryptopia.
Question #4
interview-question
Can Cryptopia help other blockchain game developers?
coingape
Absolutely. We’ve recently put together a software development kit that allows apps to adopt some of Cryptopia’s most useful features. The first is a standalone all-in-one multisig wallet that eliminates the need for external wallets like Metamask. It’s capable of performing various transactions with its UI as well as holding ERC-20 tokens and NFTs from apps other than Cryptopia. What’s more, its multisig functionality lets you secure your assets with 2FA and MFA, designate multiple owners, and recover your account should you lose your device. Each Cryptopia wallet is also an account with on-chain single sign-on functionality, allowing players to log in to multiple apps with a single account. All these features are meant to quickly and easily onboard new players into the game. The second major feature is a node network, a P2P mesh network aimed at facilitating decentralized network traffic. It sits on top of the blockchain and creates a network where the nodes directly communicate with each other without a centralized server or cloud infrastructure. The nodes can handle the traffic for non-essential data not suitable for the blockchain, bringing down gas prices and creating a seamless gaming experience akin to surfing the web. For example: in Cryptopia, nodes can provide a player’s exact location and facing. You can pinpoint a player’s coordinates in the tile, much like with a GPS. Players are free to interact by simply walking up to and chatting with each other in real time. Nodes also bundle transactions together, further lowering gas fees. For a truly seamless experience, groups may set up their own nodes to pay for the gas fees of their members. All these features are conveniently included in a single package, saving developers time and helping to provide the seamless Web3 experience that their users expect.
